The Murray Williams Sidecar Cup 2014

The Australian Sidecar cross Association (ASA) is proud to announce the inaugural running of the Murray Williams Sidecar Cup. This event will showcase Sidecar Motocross as seen in yester-years with the development of a premier Sidecar Motocross Race Day in South Australia.

The ASA President, Mr. Rocky Warren said, “The ASA have worked tirelessly in developing an event with a race format with generous rewards akin to that which were experienced from the 1960’s through to the 1980’s. At the same time there was an overwhelm-ing need to acknowledge the efforts of a true Legend of the sport, Murray Williams and his long time passenger Wayne Kearvell, who together won many MX sidecar titles, although both recently retired from Motocross Sidecars, they are still passionate supporters of our sport.”

As a result, and as a tribute to Murray Williams, the ASA will be holding the inaugural “Murray Williams Sidecar Cup” in place of the ASA titles, on October 26th 2014. In addition, the Wayne Kearvell Trophy will be introduced to acknowledge the outstanding achievement of a sidecar passenger at this event, re-gardless of the class they are riding.

This year the event will be held at Murray Bridge, with over $3,000.00 in total prize money shared across all classes, with the exception of Junior Sidecars, who will be awarded trophies for the Junior Murray Williams Cup. Racing will consist of 3 rounds of racing for all the usual classes from Juniors, pre 1968 through to the Modern A & B Grade. The final event of the day will be the “Murray Williams Sidecar Cup”. It will consist of 3 races of 4 laps each, back to back, which will allow anyone to have a real shot at taking out the Murray Williams Cup and taking home the first prize of $500.00. Prize money will place back to 6th.

This is an event you will not want to miss with Supplementary Regulations and Entry Forms available from the Motorcycling South Australia and ASA Websites. This event is an ideal opportunity for the interstate riders to ride the MA Australian title at Horsham (Vic) or the SA Historic Championships at ACUSA Park (SA) the weekend prior, and then venture over the following weekend and earn some valuable prize money.

A feature of this event will be a spirited demonstration of many of the past retired Sidecar racers and their passengers, on both historic and modern sidecars. The ASA already have a strong commitment from the “Legends of Past years” who we all followed as young kids in the 60’s 70’s, 80’ & 90’s.

Racing will include: Pee Wee Sidecar Demonstrations, Legends of Yesteryear Demonstrations, Junior Sidecars, Pre 1968, 1975, 1985 & 1990 Historic sidecar classes, Road Trial and Modern Sidecars.

2014 Girls Only Come 'N Try Day

Saturday morning, 41 female riders from 4 years old, gathered at the newly prepared Gillman track for the MSA & MRA “Female Only Ride Day”.

Solo Riders of the calibre of Steph Cutler, Zoe Harkness and Amy Bartsch and our top sidecar riders Kristy Schultz and Lara Wedge, offered support and encouragement to many girls, some of whom are very new to the sport.

A number of the girls had never seen a sidecar let alone ridden one, so the five outfits representing our sport did a tremendous job, offering interested passengers a ride on the side. After a quick intro to the art of swinging, Layla, Schultz, Eloise and Tianna Dohse, Eliza and Lara Wedge and Kristy Schultz took numerous girls around the track, promoting the sport to both junior and senior riders. Some showed a lot of potential!!!

The day offered girls an opportunity to come ‘n try without intimidation from the boys, although many fellas were a great help minding the kids and in the pits. A great day was had by all and a big thank you must go to the sponsors, who provided bikes and goodie bags, and Shannon and Tania for the organisation.

Well done to our sidecar chicks for your dedication to your sport.
