Sidecar Motocross legend dies. Ottmar Konigsdorfer [King] has passed away from a heart attack on 23-6-2009, at 56 years of age. He is survived by two children, Elke and Michael. Ottmar or “King” as he was known, from Germany, was one of the most well known and respected sidecar drivers in Europe. The headline of one European magazine reads, “The King is dead” He started his sporting life as a gymnast and soccer player as a young boy. He then raced junior motocross, with immediate success, and in 1973 was German junior solo champion. He continued winning in solo motocross and in 1974 and 75 had 21 victories as an International Solo Rider. Next he started with his passion of sidecar motocross and had great success with many victories. He won many races in all European countries, including France, Czech Republic, Russia, Romania, and even in Australia, where he won the John Reilly Sidecar Challenge, and was runner up in Hec Henderson in 1993. Later in 1993 he had a terrible accident whilst competing in the Grand Prix in Germany. This crash left him a paraplegic. In spite of all of this, Ottmar’s love of the motorcycle remained. He had a special quad built with hand controls and continued to compete right up until his untimely death. His positive outlook, courage and absolute strength of character were an inspiration to anyone that knew him. He was always the life of the party. He rode hard, played hard and would do anything for anyone. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him, but never ever forgotten. RIP mate, John Robinson. |
